Built for surgeons first, then the wider NHS and profession-wide services that apply to you too.
RCS England — Confidential Support & Advice Service (CSAS)
A genuine surgeon-to-surgeon helpline for anyone facing professional difficulties. You're connected with a CSAS Adviser — a practising surgeon in your specialty, based in a different region — who listens and helps point you toward the right further support.
- Available UK-wide, during business hours
- The RCS describes it as open to all surgeons, not only College members — check current eligibility on the RCS website
RCS England — Wisdom Wellbeing (Health Assured)
A 24-hour confidential helpline plus an app with counselling (BACP/NCPS-accredited), critical incident debriefing, legal and financial advice, and a dedicated surgeon-to-surgeon peer support option for those in the UK and Ireland.
- For RCS England members — registration code MHA021282
- Telephone, video, or online counselling; wellbeing app with trackers and breathing exercises
RCS England — SUPPORT Improvement Collaborative
A national programme helping trusts set up peer-led, post-incident response teams so a surgeon can be linked to a trained first responder within 24 hours of an adverse event. Ask your clinical or medical director whether your trust takes part.
- Builds on RCS England's 2020 Good Practice Guide, now running across multiple UK trusts and health boards
ASiT — Health & Wellbeing resources
The Association of Surgeons in Training's curated collection for trainees: mindfulness and sleep apps, specialty-specific guidance (including BOA's radiation exposure guidance), and links to wider counselling services.
- Open to all surgical trainees — no membership required to view the resource page
BOTA — Wellbeing & Support
The British Orthopaedic Trainees Association's own wellbeing hub, covering mental health, bullying, sexual misconduct, and managing mistakes/complaints/referrals — written specifically for orthopaedic trainees.
- For trainees in, or interested in, Trauma & Orthopaedics
Your specialty association
Most surgical specialty associations run their own mentorship or wellbeing effort alongside their educational role — worth checking directly, whatever your specialty.
- BAOMS, ENT UK, BAPS, BAPRAS, BAUS, BOA, SBNS, SCTS, the Vascular Society, and ASGBI are all listed by RCS England
NHS Practitioner Health
Free, confidential NHS mental health and addiction service for any doctor or dentist in England, at any level of severity. Self-refer — no need to go through your GP, supervisor, or employer.
- You can use a pseudonym; your employer is not informed
- Kept entirely separate from your NHS employment and training records
BMA counselling and peer support services
Free, confidential 24/7 counselling from BACP-registered counsellors, plus a peer support service — talk it through with another doctor trained to listen. Open to every doctor and medical student, regardless of BMA membership.
- Also open to your partner and dependants
- BMA members can additionally access up to 6 structured therapy sessions
Doctors' Support Network
Peer support for doctors and medical students living with a mental health difficulty — a confidential online forum, regional face-to-face groups, and an open Facebook group.
- DSN no longer runs a telephone helpline — contact is by email/online form only
Doctors in Distress
Free, confidential peer support groups and webinars for healthcare workers, founded after the loss of a doctor to suicide, with an explicit focus on suicide prevention across the profession. Not a crisis or therapy service.
Sick Doctors Trust
A 24-hour confidential helpline for doctors, dentists, and medical students worried about their own — or a colleague's — drug or alcohol use, run by doctors themselves in recovery.
Samaritans
Free, confidential, 24/7 — for anyone, about anything. You don't need to be suicidal or "in crisis" to call; many people call because things simply feel like too much.
- Free from any phone, including pay-as-you-go with no credit
Shout
A free, confidential, 24/7 crisis text line for anxiety, stress, depression, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, or simply feeling overwhelmed — if you'd rather text than talk.
- Responses may take longer at very busy times; high-risk texters are prioritised
GMC Doctor Support Service
Confidential emotional support through a GMC fitness-to-practise investigation or MPTS hearing, run independently on the GMC's behalf by the BMA — open to all doctors regardless of BMA membership.
- Supports you emotionally through the process — your defence body/indemnifier covers legal advice on the case itself
Your medical defence organisation (MDU / MPS / MDDUS)
If you're facing a complaint, GMC referral, or disciplinary process, free legal and procedural support is part of your membership — contact your own defence body before you respond to anything in writing. Most UK surgeons are members of one of these three.
- Contact whichever one you're actually a member of — check your inbox for a renewal email if you're not sure
British Doctors & Dentists Group (BDDG)
A confidential, peer-led recovery fellowship for doctors and dentists (and their families) recovering from, or wanting to recover from, addiction — alcohol, drugs, or behavioural. Runs regular meetings, in person and online, across the UK and Ireland.
- 17 regional groups plus online video meetings
- For medical and dental professionals and their family members
Surviving in Scrubs
An anonymous story-sharing campaign for anyone in healthcare who has experienced sexism, sexual harassment, or sexual assault at work — working alongside NHS England, the BMA, and the GMC to push for real change, not just awareness.
- Anonymous story submission — no obligation to be identified
- Not a crisis or reporting service — a place to be heard and to find you're not alone
Rape Crisis England & Wales — 24/7 Support Line
Free, confidential support for anyone aged 16+ in England or Wales affected by rape or sexual abuse, at any point in their life — whether it happened recently or years ago. Fully anonymous: your number isn't visible to them.

- Not an emergency service — call 999 if you're unsafe or need urgent medical help
BMA FREE — Forum for Racial and Ethnic Equality
